Aud the Deep Minded

Aud the Deep Minded is a new chamber opera by composer and clarinettist Joanna Nicholson. The first performance took place at Sound in 2024, and since then it has toured in Scotland and featured in the Made in Scotland programme at the Edinburgh Fringe, where it was a critical success.

Watch a trailer of the show filmed during the creation process, with Stephanie Lamprea (voice), Joanna Nicholson (clarinet and spoken word), Andy Saunders (horn) and Alistair MacDonald (sound art) and with lighting from Trent Kim. Clíona Cassidy joined the cast in 2025 and new projections were created by Kirsty Anderson.

Premiered in October 2024 at Aberdeen’s Sound Festival, the work has toured in Scotland and was part of the Made in Scotland programme in the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe, where it received numerous 5 star reviews. Aud the Deep Minded was created and developed with support from Creative Scotland’s National Lottery Open Fund, Made In Scotland, The Vaughan Williams Foundation, Sound Festival, and Foundation Scotland.
